You can open or check out a file from a SharePoint library from within your Microsoft Office app. On the left, under the Open heading, select the entry in the list. Optional If the document library requires that the file be checked out in order to edit it, a yellow bar appears near the top of the window indicating that check-out is necessary.
Just select Check Out to proceed:. By default, when you open a file from a SharePoint document library, it is a co-authoring situation. Other people may open the file at the same time as you to contribute to it. That is fine in many cases, but at times it may be best to check out the file so only you can edit it.
When you check out a file, you are the only person who can change it. This reduces the potential for confusion and conflicting edits. After you make changes to a file, you must check in the file so that other people can see your changes when they open the file.
If the Check Out option is grayed out, it means that someone else currently has the file open for editing. You can co-author with them, but you can't check out the file for exclusive editing while someone else has the file open. Open an Office file. Check out an Office file you have already opened. Often times users leave SharePoint documents in a "Checked Out" status. This can happen for a variety of unintended reasons. As an administrator, I would like to be able to remedy these situations when they happen. Is there a way to do it without having to log in as the user? For the obvious reasons, you will see that a document is checked out, and as a user with Full Control, you can 'check in' the document directly. If it's the last "not so obvious" reason, even a user with Full Control will not see the document at all in the document library.
To remedy the situation, you must follow the procedure below:. If you see any documents with checkboxes next to them here, you can be pretty sure there is an issue that needs attention. Find your file in the list of files. Select Check in.

Easy to follow. No jargon. Pictures helped. Didn't match my screen. Incorrect instructions. Too technical. Not enough information. Besides, as Rene mentioned, if it is possible, could you let the site administrator create a same view as you did in the same library select public view? Then check whether other users can see the items checked out by them under the view.
This is important for us to narrow down this issue. I will have to check into this more. I have to track down who the site admin is for this site I use. It may take awhile. Also make sure you select the option that shows files outside of folders.
Now go to the "Checked out to" column in the view you just created and click the drop down arrow. If the library is functioning properly you should see your name as an option to filter by since you have items checked out to you. This will create a view filtered to show items checked out to you however, it won't use the [me] argument. It will use your display name instead.
JoelMcBride- [O]. I would like to be able to quickly see any files checked out by me in the entire library. This thread is locked.
